Plant Breeding Innovation

Plant breeding is the art and science of improving plant genetics to use traits and characteristics that are beneficial for the specific purpose of that gene, such as higher yield, better taste, greater disease resistance, beautiful flowers, etc. This is achieved through techniques such as crossing parental lines to produce an offspring plant with specific traits or characteristics or using modern molecular tools such as gene editing.

Plant breeding innovation has a long history of success and safe use. It is essential to increase food security, health, and sustainability in Canada. Seeds Canada members are proud to introduce hundreds of new and improved varieties for their customers each year and are committed to safe and transparent product launches.

Seeds Canada advocates for a risk and science-based model that fosters innovation for Canadian plant breeders. Please contact Lauren Comin for more information.
